Experiencing the Thrill of the Mecum Collector Car Auction

J.R. Ibarra took us to Glendale, Arizona, for the annual Mecum Auctions, a truly unique event in the world of collector cars. It’s more than just an auction; it’s a “traveling experience, a car show, the biggest car show in the world that travels around to 15 locations a year.” With nearly 2,000 vehicles hitting the auction block, you’re bound to find something unique among the mix of cars, trucks, and cycles.

What’s fantastic about Mecum is its focus on fostering the “love for automobiles.” As J.R. highlighted, it’s not just about buying and selling; it’s about having an “appreciation of the fine vehicles” and following their journey. You can even talk to some of the owners and learn about the “history and provenance” behind these amazing machines.

We saw a particularly fascinating example with retired GM engineer Tony Briski’s “beautiful recreation of a famous GM prototype from the 1960s, the CERV I.” The Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle number one was reverse-engineered by Tony, fulfilling his lifelong dream. This personal story truly embodies the passion that fuels the collector car community.

Mecum’s traveling auction circuit also includes other hotspots around the country like Houston, Indianapolis, and Las Vegas.
