This August, that spectacular night sky takes center stage during SkyFest Big Bear, a three-day celebration of astronomy, nature, and outdoor adventure that invites visitors of all ages to explore the universe from one of Southern California’s best stargazing destinations.

From August 14–16, SkyFest transforms Big Bear into a gathering place for space enthusiasts, families, photographers, and anyone who’s ever been fascinated by the night sky.

The festival combines science, outdoor recreation, and hands-on experiences, with everything from expert talks and immersive exhibits to guided hikes and telescope viewing. 🔭 See the Universe Up Close

One of the festival’s signature experiences is Stargaze at the Summit.

After riding the Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair at night, visitors arrive at the mountaintop, where astronomers from the Bear Valley Astronomical Society guide guests through the night sky using powerful telescopes.

From distant galaxies and glowing nebulae to planets and star clusters, it’s a rare opportunity to witness the universe in remarkable detail.

🥾 Adventure After Dark

SkyFest isn’t limited to telescopes.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, guided nighttime hikes offer a chance to experience Big Bear’s forests beneath a blanket of stars. Away from the noise of everyday life, the mountain landscape takes on an entirely different character after sunset.

The festival also includes astrophotography workshops led by local photographer Brady Enger, giving participants practical tips for capturing everything from constellations to the Milky Way.

SkyFest makes astronomy approachable for everyone.

Families can visit the free Nighttime DiscoverFest at the Big Bear Discovery Center, where younger explorers can enjoy campfire storytelling, nature activities, and hands-on astronomy experiences designed especially for kids.

Inside the immersive AstroDome, visitors can journey through galaxies, supernovas, and distant corners of the universe without ever leaving Earth.
