Every state’s favorite HBO Max show in 2020 (MAP)

HBO Max launched on May 27, and it includes shows like Friends, Rick and Morty, Game of Thrones, and Westworld—but which one is your state’s favorite?

We used Google Trends to compare which HBO Max shows people in each state searched for in anticipation of the launch. And, we have to say, South Dakota surprised us.

Westworld wins the West (go figure)

It’s a great time to take the reigns with HBO Max if you haven’t tuned into the wildest show (kind of) set in the West. Westworld’s season three return was met with enough enthusiasm to rope in another round next year—yeehaw!

The dystopian sci-fi fantasy show was the most popular search for 12 states total, including a lotta land in the West.

Rick and Morty reigns across eight states

Wubba lubba dub dub! For fans of the show, love is more than a chemical reaction. Eight different states searched for Rick and Morty, which wrapped up its fourth season right after HBO Max launched.

With infinite possibilities across infinite universes and infinite timelines, audiences are never quite sure what to expect from the sci-fi comedy cartoon. But there’s one thing they can always count on: an absurdly good time that blends serious science and philosophy with gutter language and violence. Oh, jeez.

Sex and the City in Sioux Falls

South Dakota’s looking forward to seeing Carrie Bradshaw and crew’s Big Apple antics in Sex and the City. The romcom’s liberating focus on single women and sexuality might be just what the fifth-least populous state needs during a pandemic.

We say go for it: grab a drive-thru cosmopolitan, binge a few seasons, and do some online shoe shopping while you wait for Mr. Big.

Game over for Thrones fans

Game of Thrones surprisingly didn’t make the winner’s cut in any state. Could the disappointing ending of one of the biggest shows of all time lead to a lack of replay value for even die-hard fans? Maybe it will make a surprise return to the spotlight, but it looks like Game of Thrones’s watch has ended for now.
