For many travelers, a visit to Monterey and Carmel is about experiencing the stunning coastline, world-class dining, and artistic charm. But for Stephen Martin, a native Texan, this trip was much more personal—it was a journey into his family’s deep-rooted history in the area, dating back to the 1850s.

Tracing a Legacy in Carmel
Stephen’s ancestors, the Martins, were among the original settlers of Carmel, arriving from Lanarkshire, Scotland. Their legacy is woven into the fabric of the town, with one of the most iconic properties in the area—Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Hotel & Restaurant—once serving as their homestead and dairy farm for over 60 years.

During his stay, Stephen enjoyed a perfect sunset dinner at Mission Ranch, soaking in the same breathtaking views his family once called home. His grandfather, Carmel Martin, grew up on the ranch before becoming a prominent Monterey/Carmel lawyer, where he made history by drafting Monterey’s first city charter and serving as the city’s first mayor.
A Walk Through Family History

One of the most remarkable stops on Stephen’s journey was the Old Monterey Inn—a beautifully preserved bed & breakfast that was once his family home, built by Carmel Martin in 1929 at 500 Martin Street. Walking through the house, Stephen was moved to find a painting of his aunt still hanging on the wall in the living room—a poignant reminder of his deep family ties to Monterey.

Experiencing the Beauty of Monterey & Carmel
Beyond reconnecting with his heritage, Stephen made the most of his visit to the Monterey Peninsula:
• Carmel Beach Picnic – A relaxing afternoon on the white sands, enjoying a delicious picnic with the sounds of the Pacific.

17-Mile Drive – A scenic tour of some of the most breathtaking coastal views in California.

• Downtown Carmel – Shopping and dining in one of the most charming towns on the West Coast.
• Pebble Beach Resort & Spa – Taking in the luxury and history of this world-famous golf destination.
• Highway 1 & Big Sur – Ending the trip with an unforgettable drive down California’s most iconic coastal highway.
A Perfect Stay at Hofsas House
Throughout his journey, Hofsas House in Carmel provided the ideal accommodations. With its European charm, cozy atmosphere, and warm hospitality, it was the perfect home base for Stephen’s exploration of Monterey and Carmel’s rich history.

As he departed, Stephen left with a newfound appreciation for his family’s legacy in this breathtaking part of California—a history that continues to live on in the landmarks, homes, and stories of Monterey and Carmel.
