Would you be brave enough to get back in the ocean, if you’d been attacked by a shark? That’s just what professional surfer Bethany Hamilton did, after losing her arm in a shark attack back in 2003.
“I think fears can be very disabling,” Hamilton said. “You know, as I was kinda getting back into the ocean, my passion and drive to surf kind of overcame my fear and I just kinda learned to be thankful and smile through adversity and I just continued to chase my passion.”
Now, in addition to being a wife and mom, and traveling and surfing around the world, Hamilton has joined forces with Damon Braces and world-renowned orthodontist Dr. Jeff Kozlowski to help empower others to overcome their fears and live a confident life.
Dr. Kozlowski believes a smile can help you through any adversity.
“Well a smile is the center of a person’s identity, and if you look at Bethany, her smile is contagious,” Kozlowski said.
To learn how Kozlowski helped Hamilton to smile through her struggles, check out our story below, airing statewide this week on California Life.
