San Diego, CA – Monday, November 2, 2026 – Broadway San Diego ~ A Nederlander Presentation
will celebrate five decades of bringing Broadway productions, artists and stories to San Diego with a
special Mayoral Proclamation on Sunday, November 8, 2026, during the final performance of The
Outsiders at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
The proclamation will designate November 8 as “Broadway San Diego’s 50th Anniversary Day,”
recognizing an organization that has been part of San Diego’s cultural landscape since 1976.
The milestone celebration comes full circle with The Outsiders, which returns to the city where the
musical first began its journey. Based on S.E. Hinton’s beloved novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s
acclaimed film, The Outsiders made its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in 2023 before transferring
to Broadway in 2024. The musical received 12 Tony Award nominations and won four Tony Awards,
including Best Musical. Now a Tony Award-winning national tour, The Outsiders returns to San Diego
November 3–8.
“We are profoundly grateful for the support and commitment of our parent company, The Nederlander
Organization, as well as our President’s Club Members, season ticket holders, partners, sponsors, and
every audience member who has been part of our story,” said Vanessa Davis, Vice President of
Broadway San Diego. “While we pause to celebrate where we have been, we are equally excited about
where we are going. We are already looking ahead to the next chapter and look forward to announcing our
50th Anniversary Season this coming spring.”
ABOUT BROADWAY SAN DIEGO
Broadway San Diego made its debut in 1976 as San Diego Playgoers, presenting Equus at the historic
Spreckels Theatre. After several years of presenting productions at historic San Diego venues, including
the Fox Theatre, now known as the Jacobs Music Center, and Spreckels Theatre, the organization
established a permanent home at the San Diego Civic Theatre in 1986.
Over the decades, Broadway San Diego has presented more than 375 shows and events, including record-
setting productions such as The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, The Producers, Les Misérables,
Disney’s The Lion King, The Book of Mormon and Wicked.
In 2001, San Diego Playgoers became Broadway San Diego, reflecting the organization’s continued
commitment to bringing the best of Broadway to the region.
The organization has also played a role in developing San Diego’s next generation of theatre artists and
audiences. In 2014, Broadway San Diego launched the Broadway San Diego Awards, celebrating high
school musical theatre programs throughout San Diego County and connecting local student performers
with the national Jimmy Awards experience in New York City. For more information, visit
