Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in American men. However, early detection through screenings can lead to successful treatment and a much better prognosis for the future.
NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson knows all too well about the importance of getting those screenings. The basketball star had no history of the disease in his family. But in 2011, he was diagnosed with stage three prostate cancer.
The American Cancer Society reports about 1 in every 39 prostate cancer patients will die. However, it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Dr. Vipul Patel, one of the world’s leading robotic surgeons, explains why early screening is so important.
Patel says an early diagnosis creates more option for patients, and options are important when prostate is the leading cause of death in men. He also stresses that choosing an experienced surgeon is key to good results.
