Broadway’s Tony Award-Winning ‘The Outsiders’ Returns to San Diego for a Limited Engagement

From La Jolla to Broadway and Back Again: The Four-Time Tony Award-Winning Musical Brings Its Electrifying Story of Friendship, Loyalty, and Belonging to the San Diego Civic Theatre, November 3–8.

San Diego is getting a taste of Broadway magic! The critically acclaimed musical The Outsiders is making its highly anticipated return to America’s Finest City, bringing its powerful storytelling, unforgettable music, and high-energy choreography to the San Diego Civic Theatre for a limited one-week engagement, November 3–8, 2026.

Based on S.E. Hinton’s beloved coming-of-age novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, The Outsiders has become one of Broadway’s most celebrated productions, earning four 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

And for San Diego theater lovers, this homecoming is especially meaningful.

From San Diego to Broadway Stardom

Before taking Broadway by storm, The Outsiders made its world premiere at the prestigious La Jolla Playhouse in March 2023.

The production went on to open on Broadway in April 2024, earning rave reviews and captivating audiences with its emotionally charged performances, innovative staging, and original musical score.

Now, the musical returns to the region where its remarkable theatrical journey began, giving Southern California audiences another opportunity to experience the production that has become a Broadway sensation.

A Timeless Story of Friendship, Family, and Finding Your Place

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their tight-knit group of Greasers as they navigate a world divided by social class, rivalry, and expectations.

Facing off against the wealthier Socs, Ponyboy and his friends struggle to discover who they are and where they belong.

But beneath the conflict lies a deeply human story about friendship, loyalty, family, and the courage to dream of a better future.

With a dynamic original score and breathtaking theatrical moments, The Outsiders reminds audiences that even during life’s darkest moments, there’s still plenty of good in the world.

A Broadway Blockbuster With an Award-Winning Creative Team

The musical’s extraordinary success is fueled by an acclaimed creative team, including:

• Danya Taymor: Tony Award-winning director
• Adam Rapp and Justin Levine: Book writers
• Jamestown Revival and Justin Levine: Original music and lyrics
• Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman: Tony Award-nominated choreographers

The production’s Grammy-nominated Original Broadway Cast Recording is also available from Sony Masterworks Broadway, allowing fans to experience the show’s memorable music beyond the theater.

Critics have been equally enthusiastic.

The New York Times praised the production as “Electrifying. Astonishing. Endlessly effective.”

Entertainment Weekly celebrated its ability to inspire an entire generation, while the New York Post named it the best new musical of its Broadway season.
