Phones Down, Eyes Up: YMCA Launches Life-Saving Water Safety Campaign

Share

May is National Water Safety Month, and Coast to Coast TV Ava Lynn Thuresson sat down with YMCA water safety expert Lindsay Mondick to discuss the urgent importance of drowning prevention—especially for young children—as summer approaches.

A Silent Danger That Happens Fast

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4, and it can happen in as little as 30 seconds—even with an adult nearby. In fact, 88% of child drownings occur with at least one parent present.

“Kids are naturally curious about the water,” Lindsay shared, “but without supervision, that curiosity can turn dangerous fast.”

The YMCA is stepping up its efforts this summer not only to teach children how to swim, but also to educate adults and caregivers on the importance of being alert, attentive, and ready to act.

📵 New Campaign: Phones Down, Eyes Up

This year, the YMCA has launched a national awareness initiative called Phones Down, Eyes Up, encouraging caregivers to pledge distraction-free supervision whenever children are near water.

“We want families to designate a ‘Water Watcher’—someone who isn’t texting, scrolling, or chatting, but is solely focused on keeping kids safe,” Lindsay explained.

👀 The #1 Safety Rule: Vigilance

As a parent herself, Lindsay stressed that the most important lesson is simple: always be watching.

“Vigilance is everything. That’s what this campaign is all about—making sure someone is always watching, no matter how many adults are present.”

The YMCA also provides a downloadable Water Watcher badge that caregivers can wear as a reminder of their responsibility.

🌊 YMCA Safety Around Water Program

In addition to the new campaign, the YMCA continues to offer its Safety Around Water program—providing access to affordable or free swimming lessons and water safety education at local YMCA branches across the country.

“Check with your local Y,” Lindsay added. “We have resources to help every family feel more confident around water this summer.”
